[BREAKING] Strike: FG, NASU, SSANU Meeting Ongoing

The Federal Government is currently meeting with the Joint Action Committee comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.

Report shows that the meeting is holding at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja.

Among those present in the meeting are the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige; SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim; and NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi.

The non-teaching staff in the universities had announced that they would embark on a nationwide strike from February 5, 2021 over the Federal Government’s handling of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, sharing formula of the N40 billion earned academic allowances and non-payment of arrears of the new minimum wage.

Others are the non-payment of retirement benefits to former members, non-constitution of visitation panels to universities, poor funding of universities, teaching staff usurping the headship of non-teaching units, among others

The committee had embarked on a three-day protest over the government’s failure to honour the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the unions on October 20, 2020

JAMB opens Portal for 2020/2021 Admission

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, (JAMB) has reopened portal for the 2020/2021 admissions. The board said opening the portal gives institutions access to upload names of shortlisted applicants for the 2020/2021 admissions. ASUU Strike, Labour Minister And ‘No Work No Pay’ Clause

I carefully read the press release of December 8, 2020, from the media office of the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment regarding the on-going effort at resolving the industrial dispute between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The claims of the minister on the ‘no work no pay’ rule are flawed on several counts. First, the government lacks the right to impose a `no work no pay rule’ on workers who embarked on a strike because it (government) violated the sanctity of collective agreement, which it freely entered into with the trade union. If this is allowed to happen, then the industrial relations system would have lost the very self-regulatory pluralist value on which it is anchored. Hence, in the current case, the federal government, as the violator, cannot at the same time reach out to invoke the `no work no pay’ clause. NANS commends FG over suspension of electricity tariff hike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), on Sunday, commended the Federal Government over its directive suspending the recent electricity tariff hike in the country The association’s President, Mr. Sunday Asefon, gave the commendation in a statement made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
