Reps oppose School Resumption, propose Three-Month Postponement

The House of Representatives has faulted the Federal Government for giving schools the go-ahead to resume on Monday despite the increasing cases of COVID-19. The House said government officials did not consult the relevant committees of the National Assembly, contrary to their claim that all relevant stakeholders were consulted before arriving at the January 18, 2021, resumption date. FG’s creating disunity among Varsity Workers - SSANU, NASU warn

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff of Nigerian Universities have accused the Federal Government of discrimination among university workers, warning that such a situation might further cripple the university system. The Unions under the aegis of Joint Action Committee, South-South Zone at end of a three day National Protest in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, said universities have four unions and for the system to function effectively, all the unions and segments must be recognised and carried along National Vice President of SSANU, Cheta Ugochukwu Azuma, said the unions are not comfortable with the situation in Nigerian universities as the FG has neglected some workers. Resumption: NANS tells FG to approve COVID-19 support funds for Nigerian Varsities, Polys

National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS), has called on the government to give COVID-19 support funds to universities and polytechnics in the country to combat the killer infection. NANS’ National President , Com. Sunday Asefon, said such funds would help the schools, especially the tertiary institutions to procure precautionary facilities to stem the tide of COVID-19. In a statement in Ado Ekiti, on Friday, Asefon expressed joy over the compromise reached by the federal government and stakeholders that schools should resume, describing this as a long-awaited respite for students.
