Varsity Workers may go on Strike over Unpaid Allowances - SSANU Chairman

THE Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has given the Federal Government a December ultimatum to implement the new minimum wage by releasing funds to clear the backlog of new minimum wage arrears due to her members or risk industrial unrest.

SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, who made the call in Yola, warned that another strike action by the union was inevitable because the government had proved to be “untrustworthy” in honouring negotiations.

He said while other civil servants working with the FG started receiving the new minimum national wage since March, workers in the university system had yet to get the new minimum wage

Ibrahim said, “For us, we had cause to go on strike in August, and after that, government called us to the table and we sat and discussed.

“Currently, the burning issues are the release for the payment of earned allwances and also the payment of the arrears of the new national minimum wage; which should have been history by now.

If nothing is done to release the payment for the earned allowance as it is contained in our agreement and the payment of the arrears of the new minimum wage, we can no longer guarantee peace in the university system even if ASUU calls off their strike tomorrow.”
